View Full Version : What socks do you wear?
Chu Pa 11-21-2002, 02:33 AM Searched the archives and didn't find the information I wanted. What style of socks do you wear? Ankle socks that seem to be the new trend or the traditional length sport socks. Is there anybody here that wear knee high length socks? That is a rare one. :) I use to wear traditional sport length socks but found them too hot and restricting. Switched to ankle length socks which worked great for me. Personally, ankle length socks look better too. Thanks in advance. :)
Mark Keizer 11-21-2002, 02:44 AM I have tested all kinds of socks. There are socks available which are glued in stead of sewed, but i prefer both.
I now have a couple of Yonex pairs, which are ankle height and very thick socks. The left and the right are different socks. I like them, if my socks are too thin I get blisters.
JChen99 11-21-2002, 02:52 AM lol... just any regular socks i usually wear
I think they're mostly basketball sox tho
However, i find that there's a median where thinness and thickness meets that achieves the best effects (so that the sox are not too sweaty and not too thin :D)
To me it does not matter what they are, as long as they are 100 % Cotton, it absorbs your sweat not like polyester you feel sticky and sweat. I am interested in trying a pair of Yonex socks since I have not got them.
Cheers
TOmike 11-21-2002, 04:06 PM ankle socks.. they just gotta be comfortable.. my feet don't get really wet. plus they gotta be a good fit.
Special yonex badminton socks with added support at the bottom of the feet and ankle guard. :D just kidding, any pair of socks I got out of the drawers that feels good will do. They are usually ankle length and if they are any higher, I'd roll them down to ankle length.

Same here... if its not thick enough to absorb my sweat, it really hurts on the court. I feel this when i havent done laundry in awhile and only have thin polyester sox left. Ouch..
zerochillnet 12-23-2002, 03:03 AM so far i think that ankle socks are the best
yonexfanatic 12-26-2002, 01:17 AM well...as long as they're thick (so i don't get blisters)..they're fine....i can take regular socks and pull them down to make my own ankle socks
Ian G. 12-26-2002, 03:23 AM I buy the slazenger(?)(the brand that makes tennis balls) brand ankle socks. Very comfy! :)
Joseph 12-26-2002, 02:57 PM how bout those toe socks? you ever try playing badminton with those?? i just use any regular type of socks, im looking into ankle socks though.
Joanne 12-26-2002, 10:53 PM I wear sport socks.......after all the blisters I had to. lol. :)
mojoe 12-26-2002, 11:40 PM anyone try the real airy type of socks? the kind fit for a garbage can... with one a hole for each toe and another one at the heel? the super ventilated sock for all the sweaty feet out there! :D
i wear regular length sports sock made by Adidas. they usually sell for around US$9-10 for 3 pairs. quite a good deal as they last quite a long time. when they age, they become thinned and more abrasive and that means pain in the badminton court.
i have ankle socks too, but i find them too short when there is a lot of sweat. the whole sock will be completely soaked. making it really uncomfortable.
i have a pair of Yonex Japan socks. they are extra extra thick. very comfortable, but also very expensive, i wonder if that's what badminton socks are supposed to be though, extra thick and comfy....
SlaShEr 12-29-2002, 03:31 AM I use a pair of Yonex Ergoshape socks. They r very comfortable. It cost about $10 which is about $5.00 US.
RyviuS 01-02-2003, 05:20 PM I wear really thick socks that provide alot of cushion! i don't recall what brand but i buy em at costco so their pretty good. I'd rather wear thick socks that provide some cushion then some think athletic socks.
Also they prevent blisters so thats a plus +
Fourcas 01-02-2003, 06:19 PM sonehow i prefer two pair of socks. newline running socks first and then normal "tennis" socks. Now i seldom have problems with my feets! just gotta love that feeling. Hate blisters....but who dont...
ouch. had a really painful experience a couple of weeks ago. i wore a pretty worn out pair of sports socks and played 2 hours of badminton non-stop, including a lot of footwork drills running around. both socks on both my shoes are so worn down they are down to the threads. the thread were cutting into my feet for two hours. at the end of the two hours, i was limping around.
I only use running socks, made of polyester/ coolmax.
QWJr, are the coolmax socks any good? i always wonder about them. i used to wear them for biking, but i generate so much less sweat during biking (or more like they evaporate much faster) and also the pressure on biking is more evenly distributed over the whole sole i am not really stressing them out.
do they absorb sweat well and provide good cushioning? do they wear out as fast as cotton socks?
Yodums 04-15-2003, 05:58 PM Anything that is a sock haha! Except for wool socks. They're too thick and make my feet so sweaty and unfomfortable since it feels so hot.
Socks don't matter to me, it's mainly structure of the shoe, and grip!

timeless 04-15-2003, 06:49 PM I've seen people who wear soccer socks to play badminton. They even pull them all the way up to the knees. Might look fine out in a field but on a badminton court... doesn't look quite right :D. Another bad one that looks even worse IMO, are people who wear dress socks to play badminton. It looks like they came home from the office, took off their pants, then went straight to badminton, and are running around with their pants off, playing in boxer shorts :D. N A S T A Y ~

It's style in my age group (15 .. or teenagers). When I played volleyball against a school some guy had those long basketball socks (Nike) on one foot while regular socks on the other. It didn't look so bad considering his shorts were a little below his knees. But boxer style? That muts be harsh :)
Pre-emptive 04-15-2003, 08:15 PM I wear Adidas Climalite, knee height. It is extra thick under the feet but thin and highly breathable above.
IMO there is a big difference between special polyester fabrics like coolmax and cotton, the moisture transport seems to be much better, it dries easily. I also recommend to try out shirt and shorts made out of those kind of fabrics.
If you canīt find any running or biking socks with the right cushioning, you may find trekking socks featuring coolmax or similiar fabrics, which may be more supportive and cushioned.

extending this socks threads....
the past weekend, i bought a new pair of socks (actually 3 pair for the prices of US$6 on sale). they are Nike socks, cotton, i'd say low-mid high.
the nice thing about these socks is that the thickness is different in different places. the socks are thick at the bottom of the feet, ankle and toes area for the comfort and support. at the same time, they are thin and airy at the top of the feet. you can kind of tell the difference in thickness from the picture attached.
i tried them out on both saturday and sunday, played almost 4 continuous hours on saturday and two hours on sunday. i find the material very comfortable and also breathable.
i will find out how durable they are in a few month's time...
that's not your foot right kwun? :D
bluejeff 06-02-2003, 03:53 PM Well, it could be :D
Also, Nike socks are really nice, I have been using Nike socks for years and they just feel so good anyway.
Cheung 09-22-2003, 10:26 PM 3D ERGO SOCKS
Prevents toe compression, enhances sprint power
New functional/ergonomical socks are designed based on bioengineering. It is also the first socks designed sepertely for the left and right foot (ERGO maunfaturing technology).
- No pressure on the big toe and prevents compression, enhances the power of the big toe
-ERGO technology helps cover the whole foot with appropriate pressure which give a feeling of greater comfort.
No more problems of looseness of socks
These socks are ergonomically designed for the left and right foot, please check for the L & R on the sole before wearing.
Give you guys one guess which company produced this statement on their socks.:)
I got three pairs for about 120HK which was quite inexpensive (my main criteria when buying socks)

$20 cad for 3 pairs? Those are expensive socks!
badrad 09-22-2003, 11:19 PM Oh man, I'm bad enough just keeping even sets of sox together, now having to keep from just having 6 right foot sox sitting in my drawer.
yeah $20 for 3 pairs is quite expensive, but the original Thor-lo's were in the $10 pair price range when they first came out.
Pete LSD 09-22-2003, 11:40 PM Who else but Yonex! That's a very good deal Cheung. Where did you get such a good deal?
Overall, I rate Yonex's sock much superior to those made by North American Mills.

Carbonexer 09-23-2003, 11:31 AM The Yonex 3D Ergo is the best. You have got to try it to believe me. There is no loose end in your shoe because the sox are knitted for left and right foot independantly.
Ranking at Bras Basah Singapore is selling for S$7.90 a pair. What a steal! Damm... I bought mine from Sunrise Yonex at S$9.90. :( Gonna get another pair as my spare sox. :D
Pete LSD 09-23-2003, 07:26 PM As an update to Cheung's post, I asked Marky the other night and he told me he could get 4 pairs (thick and thinner versions available) for HKD 120!!! He got them from Rose if I remembered correctly.
Marky 09-23-2003, 08:50 PM Some correction I have to make to Pete:
These were bought last Dec when I was in HK: Emmy HK$35 each, thick, I bought two pairs. Then I bought two pairs (a bit thinner) at HK$50 total in the sport section of a Japanese department store, Jusco, near the Quarry Bay/TaiKooShing, HK. All have the same elastic-band-thing that tie your feet and the arch tight so that they won't slip easily into the shoes. These socks bag the feet well with no space left around the toes or the part near the ankles.
I machine wash them after each session of games (I play three times a week) and they seems to still look new (very white) as of todate. I would think that they are very durable and comfortable. I typically throw away all my other brands socks and just keep these YY socks in my drawers.
I don't know if they are the "3D Ergo" that Cheung bought.
Mrs Kuncoro 08-27-2005, 12:09 PM OUCH that must have killed
i know we are talking of socks here , but you can also get special pads that you can put in the balls of your feet made with a special silicone gel moulded to pretect insoles they really do work wonders and defo prevents nasty blisters , if socks dont work try these

b0urg301s13 08-27-2005, 10:58 PM I have worn thorlos for years now and they are indeed durable and very comfortable. i dont get no blister no more. I used to get blisters wearing regular socks by Nike or Adidas. i own 7 pairs, mostly 1/4 high and the mini crew.
been looking for an ankle length Yonex ergo, does anyone have any clue where i might get them?
event 08-29-2005, 12:53 AM QWJr, are the coolmax socks any good? i always wonder about them. i used to wear them for biking, but i generate so much less sweat during biking (or more like they evaporate much faster) and also the pressure on biking is more evenly distributed over the whole sole i am not really stressing them out.

I only wear Coolmax or similar socks. You can't buy them in Korea for sports. They have some for hiking but they're thick and expensive, often knee-length and argyle and never white. I buy them at running or hiking stores when I'm in Canada. Usually the ones for running or tennis are the right thickness for badminton but still reinforced at heel and toe. Mind you, for running I only ever use the thinnest ones with little or no reinforcement.
The moisture transport is much better and they last much longer than cotton. The biggest complaint I have about Coolmax anything is that it tends to stink more than cotton. I don't know whether the moisture evaporates too fast leaving only the BO in the fabric. That goes for shirts and socks. Oh well. Thank god I don't have to use a laundromat.
zuihoujueding 04-04-2008, 09:09 AM i wear holeproof ankle socks. the new range has 'copper' which fight odour. Woooo!
jhirata 04-04-2008, 03:13 PM I wear Mizuno ankle socks.. they match my Mizuno shoes :D
martin8768 04-04-2008, 04:49 PM i wear a assortment of nike and adidas socks, mostly nike ones. my favorite pairs are these nike shox which are cushioned on the toes and heel, then i have a pair that are similar that are "quarter" which also have a thicker bottom and a thin mesh-like top. if i am playing for more then 2 hours then i need to wear 2 pairs of socks because of blisters and sweating. so for that i have one pair of special nike socks that are like "anti-blister" and their super super thin polyester type that goes underneath then a cushioned sock over top. very comfortable and i never get blisters, slipping in the shoe and it sucks up all that insane sweat that my feet make :O
DinkAlot 04-04-2008, 05:40 PM I wear Asics Tiger black color, no show (low cut) socks. They are 100% cotton socks. So any 100% cotton socks will do.
Why so simple?
I need my socks to move as little as possible inside my shoe. I need max friction to avoid the slipping and sliding of my feet inside the shoe.
I used to wear microfiber type, advanced space age socks and I got blisters. Even with two pairs. Why? Because my feet would slip and slide.
I tried just about everything: Thorlo, Sole, Columbia, Wigwam, Smart Wool, DeFeet, DryMax, Lorpen UnderArmour, Nike, Adidas, Asics, Saucony, Brooks, Balega, Feetures, North Face, Ultimax, and my favorite for running, WrightSock Dual layer:
http://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpage-WDLRSL.html, but to no avail, blisters, especially on both big toes where I push off.
I went back to good'ol 100% cotton and TA-DA! no more blisters. :)
As for padding/cushioning/ergonomics, I let the insole take care of that, Super Feet. :D
Also, cotton absorbs sweat the best, there's not enough air flow inside the shoe to dry the socks in the amount of time we play. If my socks become too wet, I just change them. But this is rare. This is also the reason why I wear 100% cotton sweatbands instead of microfiber type.
Of course each person's different and your mileage may vary. I say go with whatever works best for you.
Baddict_2006 04-09-2008, 12:39 AM just a plain anklet socks(i only have 2 colors..black and white)hope i can buy a new set of socks soon(my socks are starting to worn off huhuhu):crying:
Baddict_2006 04-09-2008, 12:43 AM for me any good quality sport socks will do..i like it short.
Xinguy 04-09-2008, 01:27 AM i am having the yone original sock where the pro players are having & recently just bought 4to5 pairs of victor sock:) it quite comfortable...
aerotus70 04-10-2008, 08:22 PM some brand ankle socks, and saf white socks
General Foo 04-15-2008, 08:22 AM i started wearing these socks recently.
http://www.kalenji-running.com/EN/run-800-2-pack-28911625/
great cushioning, no blisters, socks dont move in my shoes and they provide extra bounce too lol. i think they're great. u can really tell the difference from standard cotton ankle socks. also they are slightly higher than ankle socks - to provide a little bit of ankle protection.
btw dont get the run 900. they are knee length.
azabaz_ipoh 04-15-2008, 11:10 PM i used to wear adidas socks. it is thin but ok. when i bought my mizuno shoes, there was a sale on socks and it looks good so i bought 2 of them. went back to ipoh, tried it out, love it so much, i went back to kl and bought another 4 pairs. hahahaha. it is thicker than the adidas. but not uniform thickness. it is thicker on some parts than others. got ribs in the middle which i think supports my feet a lot more than the old socks. love em to bits. if ever there's a sale again, i'll surely get more of these. i wanted to try nike ones because i have used nike socks before and they are very very comfortable but they are a bit more expensive. :p
pic :)

ctjcad 04-16-2008, 01:45 AM ..if you have, then i must say that's the cleanest looking pair of used socks i've seen... ;)
azabaz_ipoh 04-16-2008, 03:09 AM indeed, i have worn it many times before. :D in fact, in some places, the thickness have been reduced a bit due to friction in shoes. :) i rotate four pair of socks. and thankfully i dont sweat that much so it remains relatively clean. and i only wear those for badminton. :p anyway, i'll take it as a compliment, thank you. :):D
jchan04 04-30-2008, 08:45 PM the ideal socks i could imagine would be thick comfy socks with air circulation on the soles and the top of the foot. it doesnt matter if it ankle or traditional high.
but i guess ankle socks is the current trend, i personally prefer ankle socks for the looks and theres more air for my legs. plus it shows my cavs.
yeah yonex has a nice pair of socks good for badminton.
AznAndrew 04-30-2008, 09:08 PM Lol, i use Champion Moisture Wicking socks. They're so awesome. No sweat :)
smash_master 04-30-2008, 09:23 PM i just wear some white ankle socks, i cant remember the brand if there is even one...but there good the bottom is more padded in a sense and all so they feel good when im playing.
loggietoh2003 05-06-2008, 01:26 AM does your country sell original badminton equipment & accessories from Japan? It's the best quality and most comfortable i find so far. Nothing come close to it. Socks not only provide protection to your feets from injury & shock absortion, it also reduce friction betw legs & the shoes. Finally, your legs are the one that have the most contact with all types of surfaces, so why stingy on it, you deserve better treatment.
noppy 09-28-2008, 12:01 PM i used SOTX socks which are soooooooooooooooooo comfy and made from towel so are super absorbent so no sweat at all. and look sweet too
kapitalism 10-04-2008, 01:39 AM Well.... for me socks that is 100% cotton and not into ankle socks. Reason is that i always wear my ankle guard for protection. Meaning that ankle is out of my list. Prefer thick comfy~softy feel socks materials also give cushion like action when jumping, absorb the dampering effect.
But same time, i do add shoe sole pad to more comfort to prevent major shock when landing from jumps. Brands? As long it is a familiar brands, i don't mind.

BUnstable 10-28-2008, 07:43 PM What do special Badminton socks do? Does it helps better than a normal pair of socks or some sports socks?
ph_leung 10-29-2008, 01:16 AM I have similar preference to Dink for higher friction material so my feet don't slip much with the insole. To keep things comfy and dry, I bring two to three pairs of playing socks for the two to four hours I play.
I mainly use Adidas Climalite ankle length socks. Even for the same type of ankle length sock, there are several variations of these (at least in BC and Washington). The ones I prefer are mostly cotton with a minor mix of polyester, nylon, spandex. The bottom has more cushioning and the top is thinner.
- Black feels rougher and higher friction than white. This is especially true after multiple washes.
- Black seems to compress less than white when moist.
- The ones with style stripes on the bottom near the ball of the foot wear out really fast at the stripes resulting in a see-through thin in the pattern of the stripe outline.
- The ones with a ribbed elastic around the ankle have a slightly different mix of materials and is stuffier feeling.
100% cotton Nike socks don't work well for me. They compress thin quickly after a few games. This causes the material to start folding over in between the shoe and foot.
noppy 10-30-2008, 10:00 AM these are by far the best socks :)

zeushi 12-29-2008, 03:40 AM psss, socks are for rich people... lol
jchan04 09-16-2009, 12:25 PM i wear dry-fit socks from Nike, at ankle length.
i think it needs to be thick enough to give comfort ... very comfortable
llpjlau 09-18-2009, 03:25 PM for those in Australia, go down to your local pharmacy and look for the $10 for 3 pairs deal on socks.
I just tried a pair tonight. The brand is Sox & Lox. They are absolutely great! great cushioning, feels comfortable, looks durable and at $3.33 a pair, they are great value for money.

Sox & Lox. They appear to be a bit thicker, and the cushioning is just amazing. Also at that price you cannot complain much. I suggest you give them a go, they're only $10 for 3 pairs. Even if you don't like them for badminton, you can always use them for other stuff.
Blitzzards 09-18-2009, 04:19 PM Ok thanks, I'll drop by Blooms later today.

have you tried the yonex socks like these? how do they compare to 100% cotton socks? Since the website says the socks has different thickness and seems geared for badminton.

Or has anyone ever tried the wonder sock? 100% cotton and advertisement says things like
-Promotes healing of chaffed and broken skin
-Helps keep feet odor free
-Soothes fungus
-Enables diabetic feet to breathe
