OK, I know this is gonna sound wierd.....

how do people clean their shoes?

I have seen people stick their shoes in a washing machine (in a laundrette). Is this common? (BTW, I'm honestly not the sort of person who goes around sticking his nose in other people's washing. Please believe me! :) )

You can put your shoes in the washing machine and it does work. But please do not swith on the heat dryer function especially for the Nike shoes. I did it before and the air pad blow up like a balloon and could not recover after cooling down.

usually if you are using a washing machine, do not use the spin dry option since the position of the shoe in the tub will most likely cause awkward spin and could damage the washer motor (if you are using a coin-operated, i guess you might not concern yourself with that). also spin dry of the shoe is relatively useless if the sole is facing outward, the water will still be trapped inside the shoe. if you have a removable liner - do so, also take the laces off as well. some people recommend placing the shoe in a mesh bag - in prevents the tongue from being pulled during the wash process and tearing.

some dryers have a removable rack that is mounted on the dryer door for drying shoes or other hard items so that there is no tumbling causing damage either to the dryer or to the shoe. (again, if it's coin-op do you really care) they only recommend low or no heat, not because of rubber melting, but heat ages the rubber sole hardening it so it becomes useless on court.

I tried to use the washing machine to wash my badminton shoes when I was in high school and it spoilt my shoes, furthermore it didn't clean my shoes as much as I used hand wash.
So, I tried not to be so lazy anymore and wash my shoes "manually" with the soap and brush and "my hands".

That's freaky. I did mine today for the first time in 4 months!. I use Cif which is a bathroom cleaning product. It seems to work really well.

i once tried to wash my Nike runners in the washer...
it was horridenous, it was one of those Air shoes with practically 90% of the sole was bubble.. the foam sole was worn out, it was soggy and wet, there was water inside the Air pockets and the sole and foam started to come apart.. in the end, the shoes were in shabbles and the foam rotted off... maybe it's just with nike though =P

What i've always done is put the pair in the washing machine at opposite ends, and without clothes. It might be a good idea to skip to spin. Then I put the badminton shoes in front of my 24 inch box fan :)

this was during the summer so the fan was on anyway. It was perfectly dry after half a day, and felt perfect.

tips - only wear your badminton shoes indoor and on court. ;)

about the smell, I do use the deodorizer balls to get rid of it, but somehow i think the smell from the balls is too strong.

As far as the smell...I heard you can try to put dry tea bags in it, that should get rid of the smell. Just remember not to recycle the tea bags...:p

Yeah, I used tea bags for my shoes, I think it works great.

Plus, I never use washing machine to wash my shoes. Once it getting really dirty, I just use a brush (and some cheap soap) to wash it in the sinc.

Hey Kwun,

I've tried the odor sure shot stuff. Works nice and it isn't really that messy as long as you control how hard you squeeze the bottle...otherwise its like a snow storm.

Smell comes back in about a week or so depending on how often you wear your shoes. I've had my bottle for about 3 Months now but I'm not religious in using it.

kwun
10-30-2002, 08:41 PM
txyu,

thanks for the tips. glad to hear that the stuff actually works!

i puff'ed some into my badminton shoes this morning. i am still at work right now so i haven't checked them. looking at the size of the bottle, i think if i apply it once a week, it will last at least a year. so if it works as advertised, then not bad for a few dollar's investment...

snow storm.. yes.. i do need to practice how hard i squeeze... :)

kwun
11-05-2002, 04:11 PM
well, ok, i sprayed the powder in my shoes and left it for a whole week. upon nose inspection, the odor was much more bearable. however, there is still a little left.

i used the shoes for one evening afterwards, and while the odor was better, it is still there.

i wonder what this product does really. it may be killing off the smell, but not killing off the bateria that was already living in the shoes. and when excited the bateria came back and gave out the smell.

the odor only happens with this pair of shoes, i don't have problem with my other pair. too bad this pair is more comfortable.

Syed,

what is this Oxyclean stuff? sounds promising. the powder is ok, but i think it only gets rid of the smell but not the source of the smell, which is the bacteria.

kwun
12-23-2002, 06:42 PM
i did a quick search on google, and it turns out that oxyclean is for cleaning only, like stains and stuff like that, it won't work for killing off the stench...

Soak in warm water with few drops of "Bleach"ing liquid, will get rid of the bacteria and get rid of the stain. Brush and rinse after two hours bleaching.

You can try and dry them under the sun and then spay with some odour spay specialy made for shoes. I use to do it for my riding boots.

Sprinkle some baking soda inside the shoe leave it overnight to neutralize the odor then shake off the baking soda.

Since I was little, my grandmom told me to do it in this simple way:

First, get a big container, and fill with water
Then, put some "Tide" or washing power in it and stir until everything dissolved.
Then, put your shoes, pads, and strings in the container separately
Then, put them in and wait for 30 minutes.
Then, Hand wash for 3 minutes.
Finally, Rinse and put everything against the wall, but do not hang on the wall to dry. (Indoor)

That's it ! :D very easy and simple!! (Although I have not yet wash any of my shoes in past 5 years.)

washing the shoes.... if its badminton shoes, i just use an old toothbrush, detergent, and a water... then gently brush away, since badminton shoes dont get dirty if u use them in court only. :)

For the odor... I use foot powder religiously. Apply em to my feet before putting on the socks... ever since, i've never had problems with bad smelling feet / shoes because of that simple ritual... In fact, i can still stick my nose into all my shoes and inhale without being offended. :p But of course, i also dont have any kind of a jump smash to speak of.... it prolly just God's way of being just :p

If i play badminton often like 3 times a week. I clean my shoes every 2 weeks. I carefully clean the soles and as well rub the uppers with a damp cloth. In regards to smelly shoes , wear clean socks everytime u wear. Spray your shoe with shoes freshner. If you check my shoes.. most of them look like new even after 6 months of wear.

I heard from a few friends that if you use a wet paper towel or a wet rag to clean your court shoes it ruins your court shoes. If so, how do you get dust and other stuff off your court shoes?!!:crying:

wood_22_chuck

Use Egyptian cotton cloth with minimum thread count of 500, dipped lightly in scented mint oil extracted from the rare Eucalyptus plant grown in Mediterranean climate.

Otherwise, use a wet paper towel, or wet rag.

The best maintain your shoe is to clean it every 2 days ( assuming if you play everyday ). Apply a little soap on an old toothbrush will do the trick on the sole and the sides. For uppers.. just use some mild detergent and a cloth to wipe it.

I think the best way that i have come across is Wash them in good soap water and dip them overnight in something like a Fabric Softner. (Its not exactly a Fabric softner but something to dip your clothes in for 20 mins or so to give a pleseant smell... I used to buy them from Thailand TESCO) Its a liquid that you add to water and soak your clothes in after rinsing...

After this process is done leave your shoes out to dry agaist the wall. You can let the sun kill all ther germs that cause all the stink in a natural way... When you do so pls pull out your insoles and remove your shoelaces....

Alternatively, you can use some Axe oil or Euculuptus oil and dry them in the sun...

Finally, give yuor shoe a healthy spraying of AXE or some cheap DEO (strong but not making you feel dizzy)

Renkinjutsushi
03-22-2005, 07:14 PM
i usually just wet a cloth and wipe the soles after each time i wear my shoes... but i find that sometimes the cloth cant wipe OFF some of the dust or whatnot... i've been doing this for about a month and it doesn't seem to affect the gripping of my soles.:)

and yeah... my friend also suggests to me to spray AXE in the shoe to keep the smell good:o

Actually, if you only use your badminton shoes in a court.... How dirty can it get?:p

Super~ME!
03-28-2005, 01:46 AM
...about the smell issue...the Axe stuff works pretty good...i do it myself. the baking soda idea isn't bad either since its actually sold in boxes for people to put in their fridge to prevent smell from developing which probably means it should work pretty well.

...cleaning the shoe completely isn't really a big thing for me...i just try to keep it as new-looking and perfect as possible except for those patches that show up when i lunge and drag em on the floor...other than that...i just use some wet paper towels and wipe any dirt, dust, or anything visible off...i've never tried using any cleaners...my mom is always telling me that theres no need for expensive cleaners or that they'll ruin the shoe and eat away at it...and also...this is the first time i've heard people putting their shoes in the washing machine...i've thought about it before...but never thought it was possible...wow...:p

...and Neosakai...i guess you're right about how they shouldn't get too dirty if you only use them on the courts...but unless you mean strictly on the courts and in the gym...who knows what you might step on if you go outside for just a drink or something...and for us guys...say you go to a place where the janitor is kinda lazy or just happens to be on vacation...i've stepped in so many things by accident and not notice until i clean em like pop spills and other sticky things...or who knows how bad the washrooms might be and how careless other guys can be...you don't really want stuff growing in your bag now would you?...:D

it sounds goodI find the problem is especially bad with polyester (eg Coolmax) socks. If you can stand the soaking feeling, use cotton. Everyone in Korea uses cotton. I'm just thinking they don't sweat as much as I do.
One thing I see other people do is take off their shoes in between matches. That can be tricky if you have to rush onto a court.
One thing I do is take my insoles out and wash them after every evening at the gym. I also alternate shoes and this gives me time to wait for the insoles to dry.

what about shoes in the (clothes) washer?

I Would not recommend. Remember that there's plenty of glue that keeps your shoe together. I used to work in a sport shop, and every now and then saw people trying to bring back shoes that were literally fallen apart. Of course no warranty covers that. There are specific washing powder for shoes though, and together with mild water you shouldn't have any problems. Also remember that your washing mashine is probably way more expensive than your shoes, and you might harm your machine more than your shoes...

I wash my shoes (indoor and jogging shoes too) regularly in the washing maschine, 4 or 5 times in one year i think and till now i dont have any problems. I wear asics and addidas.
No more than 30°C and is better to put every shoe in a cotton bag so they dont get scratched.

This should be in a badminton fanatics section:

You know you're a fanatic when you write a 4 page thread on badminton shoe odour!

Hehe...

On a contributory note, for those with stinky/sweaty feet - try using two pairs of socks when playing, and when you're not, don't just leave your shoes in your bag, but let them air out. That and some Febreeze (deodourizer) should do the trick!

I found golf cleaning tool ( the pick and brush ) to be really good at cleaning the soles of my shoes, though most the time my shoes are only used for court (I also use the for indoor basketball and will pick up debris from the courts)

I've washed my shoes by hand with a good dish soap after removing the insoles and flush the insides with some Lysol antibacterial - let them dry, then put in new insoles. Fresh as a daisy.

my advice is Don't wash it. it's the best way to prolong the shoe's lifetime. bring a shoe bag and change into ur badminton shoes when your in the court. if it gets dirty just wipe it.
just don't wash it because if u train everyday, the shoe will be almost destroyed in 2 months

my badminton shoes never get dirty because i only use it in the court, i always wash my socks to prevent bad odour and to keep the skreeeet sound i always wash/wipe the outsole rubber with clean water right after any game, and never ever let the sun shine on my shoes especially like in hot sunny day, will hardened the rubber and there you are the sweet skreeeet sound fade.....

no more odor, even the bottom is cleaned. And the rubber is actually softer too. now I just have to let it dry for a day or two, in time for next court time hopefully. good idea folks. I also throw in an old floor towel to help clean the shoes in the process. :D

I tried to clean the soles by 'washing' them, and the rubber absorbed all the water.. and when I walked/ran on them, the pressure pushed out the water out of the soles, making me slip very often. So I decided to play with my nike dunks that day....

Just clean it using regular cleaning brush... you won't need to brush too hard.
Wipe off the excess water and let the bottom of your shoes dry... leaving the bottom of the shoes wet is not a good idea...

i never wash my shoes by immersing it in water. for the body of the shoes i use slightly damp cloth to simply wipe off any dirt. for the soles i also use a cloth but this time it is wet and sometimes with a little soap. not too much. and just wipe the soles. usually the dirt will come off unless it is caked dirt but i never use the shoes outside of the court and thus never encounter caked dirt on my soles. :) hope that helps.

i've read before that immersing your shoes in water for long period of time is not good for the midsoles. it will break the shoe down quicker. so if you want to soak your shoe, make sure u do it quickly and wash the shoe immediately.

for that i just use a damp cloth and wipe the bottom on my shoe, if there is anything stuck inside the grip on the bottom of the shoe then i will take some tweasers and just pluck it out, other than that on the side of the side of the shoe just a slightly damp cloth and wipe it down.

try using something more pointy but not super sharp incase you cut the grip, but like a fork you can use one of the prongs on the front and get the dirt out that way, there are lots of other objects you can use as well, i use i knife at times but thats just cause its sitting right on my counter and im careful not to damage the grip on the bottom.

i hand wash my badminton shoes with a detergent soap and using an old toothbrush to remove the dirt.and rinse it 3x and put ols crumpled newspaper inside and dry it slowly outside(dont put the shoes, directly on a hot sunny day coz it will melt the adhesive from ur sole!
