Hi, just wondering if anyone could tell me if there are certain characteristics I should look for in a court shoe. Unfortunately, the shoes I am using now are no longer sold (at least i can't find them...) and they are starting to break. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Depends what you are looking for. You can get some of those ulta-light badminton shoes (from China). They very cheap & have no arch support or any expensive features (such as gel); they tend to give you a real feel of the floor; these are not for everyone. They do, however have excellent traction which is very important in a badminton shoe.
You can also find badminton shoe with more support & cushioning. They are a lit bit heavier than the basic shoe described above, but are still pretty light. These are similar to volleyball or squash shoes which also are usually very suitable for badminton.
Test the bend in the shoe before you put it on your foot. The shoe's natural bend should not be in the middle of the shoe but more towards the front (where the ball of the foot would be).
A light cross-training shoe could be acceptable (tho' not ideal) for badminton. Running shoes, however, are a definite no-no. Tennis shoes are not usually advised unless you can find a pair that is fairly light and have adequate traction for indoor surfaces. Best to find a shoe that is meant for badminton, volleyball or squash.
Pls try Adidas. Nothing else!

Yonex, Mizuno, Hi-Tec, Adidas indoor court or badminton shoes are the best you can find. Can't go wrong with these brands. :)

The best shoe I have so far used is the Adidas Contour. It is a cross-trainer, but is low, with good arch and cushion. The only drawback is the sole is dark blue, so is restricted only to community centers that don't complain about dark soled shoes.
I restrict my Yonex shoes to club use.
i use addidas "smith millenium"
these are one of the best shoes i've ever used...
make sure you only use them on court though...
otherwise the sole will fade after 2-3months... of hard use...

I used previously Adidas Vendetta and the shoes were really good. It lasted cca 11 months. They died with honor on yesterday morning baddy session. Two new holes + break in the left sole.
So I bought Mizuno Wave Spike yesterday. Today morning was my first baddy session with it. It has worse grip on wooden floor and is a bit too tough for standing on tips. Changing direction to sides was a bit more difficult as well. Tomorrow I play on Taraflex, will see how it works there. I have slight suspicion that Mizuno can produce wonderful top class jogging shoes (own experience) but indoor shoes are not the real top class.
I think that I can get used to Mizuno. But I am sure that when I destroy it I am going back to Adidas.
